How to Safely Return to the Gym After Quarantine

6 月 10, 2025

The pandemic has changed how we live, work, and even how we work out. As quarantine measures started in March 2020, gyms closed their doors, and our regular fitness routines were put on hold. However, as restrictions lift, gyms are reopening with new protocols. If you’re planning to return to the gym after a long break, here are some essential tips to help you ease back into your workout routine safely.

1. Mask Up

While masks may feel uncomfortable during a workout, they are a crucial part of protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. A comfortable, breathable mask that still offers protection is key. Consider a mask with multiple layers or one with a PM2.5 filter to provide added security. Though it may take a bit to get used to, you can still perform at your best while wearing a mask—so, don’t skip it!

2. Maintain Social Distancing

Social distancing remains critical in public spaces, especially in gyms. The need for physical space is essential to limit the spread of the virus. Try to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others, whether you’re using cardio equipment or lifting weights. While gyms often pack equipment close together, it’s up to you to select machines or spaces that allow for proper distancing. Being mindful of others is crucial in preventing exposure.

3. Pick Off-Peak Times for Your Workout

Every gym has its busiest and quieter times. If you’re flexible with your schedule, take advantage of the quieter hours by asking gym staff when the facility is less crowded. With more people working remotely, it’s easier than ever to shift your work schedule to accommodate your fitness routine. Some gyms may require reservations due to capacity limits, so make sure to book your spot early to guarantee a place.

4. Clean Equipment Before and After Use

While wiping down equipment has always been good practice, it’s even more important now. COVID-19 can spread through surfaces, and many people who carry the virus are asymptomatic. To prevent cross-contamination, always clean any piece of equipment before and after using it. This simple step can help keep everyone safe.

5. Avoid Touching Your Face

Touching your face with unwashed hands is one of the easiest ways to contract viruses like COVID-19. Avoid touching your face during your gym session, especially after touching shared equipment. Bring along disinfectant wipes or a towel to wipe away sweat, ensuring you don’t inadvertently transfer germs.

6. Wash Your Hands Regularly

Hand hygiene is a fundamental way to stop the spread of germs. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom or touching shared surfaces. Keeping your hands clean is one of the most effective ways to stay safe.

7. Ease Into Your Routine

If you’ve been keeping up with workouts at home during quarantine, you may have stayed active, but it’s important to ease back into your gym routine. It’s unlikely you’ve been pushing yourself as hard as you would in the gym. Start slow to allow your body to adjust and build back up to your usual intensity. This will help prevent injury and make your transition smoother.

By following these guidelines, you can safely return to your gym routine while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Stay informed about your gym’s protocols and always prioritize safety—your health and the health of others is the most important thing.
