The Benefits and Drawbacks of Eyelash Extensions

6 月 11, 2025

Eyelash extensions have become a popular beauty trend in recent years, with many people opting for them to achieve fuller, longer lashes without the need for mascara. After hearing countless rave reviews from friends and seeing the results for myself, I decided to give them a try. I was gifted a certificate for eyelash extensions this past Christmas and was excited to experience the transformation firsthand. Below are some of my honest thoughts on the pros and cons of eyelash extensions, based on my personal experience.

When it comes to eyelash extensions, you have several options to choose from, including synthetic, silk, and mink lashes. For my first set, I went with synthetic lashes. Although my lashes were dramatic, I didn’t mind the initial bold look, but I found that experimenting with makeup helped them blend better and started to look more natural over time.

Why People Love Eyelash Extensions: The Benefits

One of the first things I noticed after getting eyelash extensions was how great they looked. They instantly added a touch of glamour to my eyes without any effort. They also made getting ready in the morning so much easier—there was no need for mascara or eyeliner, both of which tend to irritate my sensitive eyes. This saved me valuable time during my morning routine, allowing me to feel more polished with less effort.

Another perk is the “instant” transformation. When you wake up, your eyes already look made up, which means you can skip several makeup steps. This was a huge time-saver for me, especially on busy mornings when I’m trying to get out the door quickly.

Finally, one of the most unexpected benefits was the “me-time” I got from the experience. Since I work from home, I often find myself stuck in front of the computer all day. Going for a lash fill every couple of weeks became a great excuse to step out of the house, relax, and enjoy some pampering.

The Other Side: What to Consider Before Getting Eyelash Extensions

While eyelash extensions have their advantages, there are also a few downsides to consider.

First, the cost. The initial set of eyelash extensions can run you about $200, plus tips. And that’s not the end of the expenses—maintenance appointments, which are necessary to keep your lashes looking fresh, cost around $50 every 2-3 weeks. These costs can add up over time, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Caring for eyelash extensions also requires some changes in your daily habits. For the first few days, I found it difficult not to rub my eyes or get them wet in the shower. It can feel like a challenge to avoid contact with water, especially when washing your face or removing makeup. I had to adjust by using gentler products like Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes instead of my usual eye makeup remover.

In addition, you’ll need to be more cautious about getting your lashes wet. While some lashes are designed to be water-resistant, the real issue isn’t the water itself but the urge to rub your eyes after water splashes on them. I had to get creative with my shower routine, including using a removable showerhead and tilting my head back to prevent water from hitting my face.

Lastly, if you wear glasses like me, you may find it a bit uncomfortable. If my glasses aren’t positioned just right, the lashes tend to hit the lenses. It’s not a huge deal, but it can be a little annoying when they press into my eyelids, especially if I forget and push up my glasses.

Final Thoughts: Are Eyelash Extensions Worth It?

After having eyelash extensions for over a month now, I’m still undecided on whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The compliments I’ve received have definitely made the experience feel worth it, but I’m still adjusting to the maintenance and costs involved. If you’re someone who enjoys the idea of having beautiful, low-effort lashes every day, eyelash extensions could be a great option. However, be prepared for some lifestyle adjustments and ongoing expenses.

If you’re considering eyelash extensions, I recommend weighing both the pros and cons carefully to see if they’re right for you!
